TPA Advisory Committees Recap

The TPA Advisory Committees met last week and reviewed:

Draft Transportation Improvement Program (TIP)
Fiscal Years 2022 - 2026

The TPA is currently soliciting public comments on its draft Transportation Improvement Program (TIP) for the upcoming five fiscal years. Go to PalmBeachTPA.org/TIP to review the draft TIP and offer comments using a convenient online public comment form.

2021 National Bike Month - May

May is National Bike Month, promoted by the League of American Bicyclists and celebrated in communities from coast to coast. #BikeThere and celebrate Bike to Work Week from May 17-23, 2021 and National Bike to Work Day on May 21. For more information, visit BikeLeague.org/BikeMonth.

2021 Love to Ride Challenge

During National Bike Month, TPA staff is participating in the Love to Ride: Bicycle Month 2021 Challenge. The TPA is also encouraging local municipalities and partners to participate. For more information and to register, visit LovetoRide.net/Florida.

Walk Friendly and Bicycle Friendly Community Designations

The TPA encourages local governments to pursue Walk Friendly and Bicycle Friendly designations. Local businesses can also pursue Bicycle Friendly Business designations. Bike Friendly Business applications are due June 10th and Bike Friendly Community applications are due August 5th.

2021 Motorcycle Safety Awareness Month

May is Motorcycle Safety Awareness Month and the U.S. Department of Transportation’s National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) wants to remind vehicle drivers and motorcyclists alike to Get Up to Speed on Motorcycles. Learn more about standard motorcycle driving behaviors and learn how to drive safely around motorcycles on our roadways at https://www.NHTSA.gov/road-safety/motorcycles.

2021 National Roadway Safety Awards

The Roadway Safety Foundation and Federal Highway Administration are now accepting applications for the 2021 National Roadway Safety Awards to recognize successful roadway safety solutions that contribute to the goal of zero deaths and serious injuries on our nation’s roadways. Applications are due by May 28, 2021. Learn more here.

Safety Funding Available for Law Enforcement 

FDOT has funding available for law enforcement agencies to conduct High Visibility Enforcement (HVE) operations to improve pedestrian and bicyclist safety. Requests for contract proposals will be accepted until funds are exhausted. Learn more at AlertTodayFlorida.com/HVE.

Funding for Transit Planning to Address Climate Change

The U.S. Department of Transportation's Federal Transit Administration (FTA) announced the availability of approximately $10 million in competitive grant funds. The funds will support comprehensive planning efforts that help connect communities, improve access to public transportation and affordable housing and address climate change. The deadline to apply is June 21, 2021. Learn more here.

RAISE Discretionary Grant Funding Available

The U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) has made available $1 billion in discretionary grant funding through the Rebuilding American Infrastructure with Sustainability and Equity grants. Transportation projects that prioritize racial equity, reducing impacts of climate change and job creation are preferred. Florida LTAP Center Designing for Complete Streets Webinar Series

This three-part webinar series in May will build upon the Introduction to Designing for Complete Streets webinar by going into further detail about Complete Streets concepts and how to create streets that are safe and functional for all users. Learn more and register here.

FHWA CMIP Tool: Using Future Climate Data for Planning & Design

The Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) has developed a new web-based tool called the Coupled Model Intercomparison Project (CMIP) Processing Tool Version 2.1, meant to help planners and designers access climate projections. The tool can help highway infrastructure become more resilient to a range of future climate scenarios using this data. Learn more about the tool and register for the webinar on May 19 here.

FHWA Value Capture Webinar Series

The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) will discuss investigations and studies related to vulnerable road users. Traffic safety experts will join the roundtable to discuss the elements of a Safe System, and ideas for improving road safety through a proactive, integrative, and shared responsibility approach at the national, state and local levels. TPA Governing Board and advisory committee meetings are currently being held as a combination of in-person meetings at the TPA office and virtual meetings on the Zoom webinar platform. To accommodate social distancing, there will be limited space for in-person attendees. Please review the guidance at the top of each meeting agenda.  

Governing Board meetings are simulcast at PalmBeachTPA.org/Live, and recorded videos of TPA meetings are posted to the TPA YouTube channel.
