2020 U.S. Driving Lowest in Two Decades

The Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) recently released new year-end estimates showing that total U.S. driving fell by 13.2%--from 3.3 trillion vehicle miles traveled (VMT) in 2019 to 2.83 trillion in 2020--after six consecutive years of increases in VMT. This decrease equals an estimated reduction of about 170 million metric tons of carbon dioxide emissions. Despite the significant decrease in VMT, preliminary data from USDOT shows that roadway fatalities only decreased by about 2% for the first six months of the year. For more information, click here.
