Hurricane Irma's Impacts

Transportation Network: Although Palm Beach County was extremely fortunate to suffer relatively minor damage, the hurricane created impacts for the transportation network, including restoration of many traffic signals. Tri-Rail has resumed service after suffering power outages that prevented the use of station elevators at some locations, plus numerous downed trees and vegetation along the rail corridor. Palm Tran and Palm Tran Connection quickly resumed normal operations. The Port of Palm Beach resumed normal operations within a few days, and Port tenant Bahamas Paradise Cruise Line supported first responders and local residents with free meals and deeply discounted cabin reservations before resuming normal cruise operations.

Emergency Management and Hurricane Preparation:
With several weeks remaining in the 2017 hurricane season, it's a good time to visit the website for the Palm Beach County Division of Emergency Management and to follow on Twitter @PBCDEM.

National Rail Safety Week - Sep. 24 - 30

South Florida's rail lines are about to become much busier and quieter, so rail safety education for pedestrians, bicyclists and drivers is more important than ever!

  • Additional new tracks were recently constructed along the Florida East Coast Railway, allowing for multiple trains to run at any time
  • The introduction of Brightline express passenger rail service later this year will add 32 daily trains in addition to freight trains already operating in the FEC rail corridor.
  • A continuous Quiet Zone will be implemented  between West Palm Beach and Miami. This means trains will discontinue the routine blowing of horns as they approach at-grade crossings, because supplemental safety measures have been installed with funding from the MPO.

Both passenger and freight service are currently operating on the region's second railway, the South Florida Rail Corridor, which also has multiple tracks. Service includes Tri-Rail, the region's public commuter rail system, Amtrack and CSX.

 GIS Expo - Sep. 28 - 29

The South Florida GIS Expo is a free annual conference sponsored by the Palm Beach Countywide GIS Forum. The Expo fosters collaboration, Geographic Information System coordination, networking, education and training for more than 600 members of the region's professional GIS community. It is held at the Palm Beach County Convention Center. Send an email to pre-register or  register at the door. Click for more details
