Final Phase of Bluegill Trail Now Open
.jpg)
The second and final phase of the Bluegill Trail officially opened on Nov. 10. This recently completed project phase received $750,000 in Transportation Alternatives program funds through the MPO. The program previously funded $500,000 towards construction of the initial section between Riverbend Park in Jupiter and Sandhill Crane Access Park at PGA Blvd. which opened in March of 2011. This northern section - with its crushed rock trail surface, grassy swale, pitcher pump will with non-potable water, hitching posts, and mounting blocks - is accommodating for equestrians as well as for hikers and bicyclists. The 10-mile multi-use trail now extends south to Grassy Waters Preserve in West Palm Beach. This new phase offers an improved asphalt surface, shade shelters, road crossings, observation platforms and scenic views for hikers and bicyclists. Bluegill is one of five trails within the Northeast Everglades Natural Area (NENA) that has been improved by Palm Beach County's Environmental Resources Management department. The MPO has additionally invested in other NENA trails in Palm Beach County. Click here to learn about NENA and the Bluegill, Pantano, Jesup, Everglades Rim, and Historic Jupiter-Indiantown trails.
