Take the "Battle of the Counties" Travel Challenge!

The Southeast Florida Transportation Council (SEFTC) has launched the Battle of the Counties Travel Challenge – a friendly, data-collecting contest between the residents of Miami-Dade, Broward, and Palm Beach counties – in an effort to improve the local transportation system.

Travel information shared by participants will offer insight and a new perspective to making our region more economically vibrant. Whether the traveling occurs by car, transit, bicycle or any other mode, participation in this study will influence important transportation decisions for our future..

West Palm Beach Seeks Public Input on Downtown Mobility and Bicycle Master Plan

In two separate but related efforts, the City of West Palm Beach is seeking public input from those who live, work or travel in the City. Please share this opportunity to provide input into the following efforts.

Mobility Study

With a public meeting held March 8, the City of West Palm Beach launched a plan to include a series of studies for downtown mobility, the Okeechobee Blvd. corridor, downtown parking management and transportation demand. The goal is to manage congestion for the growing area, and encourage more people to get around other than by car.

Go to the new website, WPBMobility.com to offer online comments and indicate areas for suggested improvements by drawing routes or locations on an interactive map.

Bicycle Master Plan

As part of the City of West Palm Beach's commitment to mobility, safety, sustainability, health and economic development, the City is developing a city-wide Bicycle Master Plan to advance a network of convenient and comfortable bike facilities.

Visit WPB.org/BikeMasterPlan to learn more and to view details of public meeting opportunities to learn more and provide input.

Request Copies of Bike Suitability Maps from the MPO

The new MPO bike suitability map indicates the bicycle level of service for roads within Palm Beach County.

The easy to read map indicates how comfortable a bicyclist may feel based on roadway speeds, traffic volumes and the amount of space provided for bicyclists to operate.

Please email Info@PalmBeachMPO.org or call 561-684-4170 to request copies.

MPO and Partners Host First Bike Palm Beach Event

Let's Bike Palm Beach was the theme of the first event held on March 19 by the MPO and its bicycle safety partners. Held at beautiful Okeeheelee Park in suburban West Palm Beach, the event offered transportation partner and safety exhibits, food trucks, a 3-mile group bike ride, and a bike rodeo to teach safety skills to young bicyclists. The bike rodeo was conducted by the Palm Beach Sheriff's Office Auxiliary, and CBS-12 provided news coverage.

Westgate Bike Rodeo

Palm Beach County's Parks and Recreation Department's annual event at the Westgate Recreation Center was held on March 18. The community event included a bike safety rodeo for young, beginning bicyclists conducted by volunteers of the Palm Beach Sheriff's Office Auxiliary. Free bike helmets were distributed and properly fitted, and participants rode through a course learning how to give hand signals and watch for vehicles. Jack the Bike Man, a nonprofit organization that restores and distributes donated bikes, raffled off several bikes to lucky winners. The MPO passed out bike and pedestrian safety literature in English and Spanish, and promoted the FLTravelChallenge.com survey.

Boca Raton Health & Wellness Experience Group Bike Ride

A group bike ride was again a part of annual Mizner Park event hosted by CBS-12 on March 18. Participants in the bike ride included City of Boca Raton Mayor and MPO Board Chair Susan Haynie; Palm Beach County Commissioner and MPO Board Member Steve Abrams; Boca Raton Commissioner and MPO Board Member Robert Weinroth; Boca Raton Commissioner and MPO Board Member Alternate Scott Singer; MPO Executive Director Nick Uhren; and MPO Transit Coordinator Valerie Neilson.

Alert Today, Alive Tomorrow Safety Campaign in Palm Springs

The Palm Springs site selected for the annual Alert Today, Alive Tomorrow safety campaign was at the top of the list for the most pedestrian related crashes in Palm Beach County, as noted in the MPO's recently released Pedestrian and Bicycle Safety Study. The intersection of Forest Hill Blvd. and Military Trail presents many challenges, including large numbers of pedestrians and bicyclists, and a neighboring population with limited English proficiency. MPO staff members gathered in the area on March 7 - along with partners from FDOT and the Palm Beach Sheriff's Office - to provide safety education in both English and Spanish in an attempt to curtail preventable accidents. The MPO is committed to Vision Zero, an effort to eliminate all traffic fatalities and severe injuries, while increasing safe, healthy, equitable mobility for all.

MPO staff members joined representatives from the Florida Dept. of Transportation and the Palm Beach Sheriff's Office to conduct the annual Alert Today, Alive Tomorrow safety campaign. The intersection was selected because of its high frequency of pedestrian and bicycle accidents.

Palm Springs Director of Planning, Zoning & Building Kim Glas-Castro, who also serves as an Alternate Member Representative on the MPO's Technical Advisory Committee, assists pedestrians at crosswalks during the Alert Today, Alive Tomorrow safety event.
